BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 screenshots leak

bbm 6
A leaked early version of RIM's upcoming BlackBerry Messenger 6 has been making the rounds since late February, but images of the new app are just now beginning to appear. Over at CrackBerry, the crew has shared a handful of images of BBM 6 in action. Unfortunately, you won't get a glimpse at a chat or file transfer -- only the profile screens (after the break) and what you see above. All that's really revealed so far is the option to set custom contact and chat colors and BlackBerry OS 6.1-style icons.

CrackBerry also warns against installing the leaked BBM 6 app. There's no guarantee this app hasn't been tampered with, and BlackBerry devices are becoming a more common target for cybercriminals.

The top Android news of 2011

Happy New Year!

So here we are, in the final hours of 2011. (And to those of you who have crossed the threshold already, happy new year!) It was certainly the busiest 365 days of Android we've seen yet -- and we're willing to bet 2012 gets even crazier.

Here's a look at the top 10 news stories (as in not device reviews) on Android Central for 2011, as ranked by pageviews. Of course, that means older stories have a leg up -- and, interestingly enough, the most-read story of the year was actually from 2010. (And one other from December 2010 snuck in, too.) And the winner was a post by Jared DiPane explaining the best way to move from BlackBerry to Android. We thought about tossing it from the list. But it also makes sense. When you're activating nearly a quarter-million Android devices daily, another platform will suffer. And that it's BlackBerry is no real surprise.

We can't thank you all enough for your support in 2011, and we can't wait to get 2012 started with you. From all of us here, thanks, and have a safe one. And now, the top Android news stories of 2011, as ranked by pageviews.

  1. Jumping from BlackBerry to Android? Here's what you need to know!
  2. A slew of popular apps are now 10 cents in the Android Market
  3. Verizon changing its upgrade policy; you'll have 20 months before you can get a new phone

  5. Will my Phone get Ice Cream Sandwich? Our predictions
  6. Verizon's new data plans broken down in complete detail

Just sit and listen. Give it some time. At first it may just sound like a repetitive piano loop. A minute in, it opens up and starts to get a little weird. Don't run off! It won't hit you right away. Somewhere around the 3:30 mark it all comes together and hits you with its holy shit moment. More »

How I Met Your Robot Mother: a Qbo 'First' (video)

Is consciousness programmable? Do robots feel? Would Kubrick have approved of Spielberg's handling of AI? While you wrap your mind around those conundrums, set aside a bit of free grey matter to soak in another Qbo milestone. When last we left the little bot, it was just coming to terms with its place in the grand scheme of things and recognizing its reflection. Since, robotic hangers-on and the geeks that love'em have been pelting The Corpora (the brains behind the operation) with questions pertaining to the self-awareness of this artificially intelligent machine. The outfit's reply? A Qbo meet-cute with a "female" member of the automated species that highlights the droid's understanding of individuality. It's a far cry from a Lady and the Tramp-style nose nuzzle, but these bots don't have to touch -- a random series of nasal flashes serve to indicate their distinctiveness and, once that's done, polite flirtation ensues. Don't believe us? You can see the sparks of android love for yourself in the video after the break.

LG unveils 84-inch 'ultra definition' 4K TV it's bringing to CES 2012

LG let us know at CES 2011 that it had 4K LCD televisions in the pipeline, but unfortunately they didn't make it out this year. Expect for that to change in 2012, as the company just announced it's bringing an 84-inch "ultra definition" (3840x2160) TV to Las Vegas to go along with its 55-inch OLED. It has all of LG's Cinema 3D and Smart TV features built-in, including support for that upgraded Magic Motion remote and voice control. There's no official word yet on when we'll see these on shelves or at what price, but it certainly looks production ready compared to other prototypes that have been displayed over the years. While we don't have easy sources of 4K-res video content yet, one of the reasons LG is making the jump first is for 3D. Its Cinema 3D tech uses a Film Pattern Retarder (FPR) screen and passive glasses that result in lowered resolution, but with those extra pixels there's no question about whether viewers are still getting at least an HD picture. So far 4K at home is the domain of Sony and JVC's high-priced projectors, but we'll see if any other companies (we'll check off Toshiba right now) show off upgrades in size and resolution of their HDTVs this year. Check the press release after the break for a few more details.
