OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

ommwriter
I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I'm all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I'm of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it's beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing -- in case something like WriteMonkey's dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter's features and creative soundscapes.

Microsoft already developing Windows 8 successor, report says

Windows 8 was officially released October 26, which means under Microsoft?s standard operating procedure, we will have to wait at least a few years before the next Windows software upgrade arrives.

But Redmond might be changing its game plan.

Code Blue

Word of the next version of Windows, codenamed Windows Blue, first leaked in August, well before the wrapping was removed from Windows 8. Now The Verge reports that unnamed sources have confirmed Windows Blue?s existence and that the next-generation software (rumored to be released in mid-2013) represents a new strategy for Microsoft.

Instead of kicking back for a few years after releasing a new OS as in the past, CEO Steve Ballmer and his team might move toward annual refreshes, complete with user-interface redesigns, new features, and a lower-cost upgrade pricing structure. Basically, Microsoft will be adopting the strategies of Apple and Google, which cycle through upgrades regularly and often.

Sharp's first 4K 32inch IGZO LCD is destined for Japanese workstations

We've been waiting to enjoy the promised extra detail and low power consumption of IGZO-based LCD panels for a few years now, and they're finally starting to appear. The latest on the docket is Sharp's new PN-K321 monitor, built for professional use with 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) plus HDMI and DisplayPort inputs, and what Sharp claims is the industry's thinnest frame at just 35mm thick. With an expected price of 450,000 yen or so (about $5,500 US) when it debuts in February 2013 it's still too pricey for our desks but if you're doing CAD work you may be able to design a budget it can fit into. We're seeing them in phones, tablets and now monitors overseas, here's hoping we'll see plenty of these high pixel density yet power-sipping panels with US release dates at CES in January.
